Music is not a natural phenomenon but a product of humans. All music, by definition, requires a certain degree of sound manipulation and thus, a minimal amount of sound. This becomes apparent when it comes to instrumental music because every instrument is a machine, from two rocks striking each other to an Amati violin to a synthesizer. Instrumental music is considered to have developed after vocal music, which has yet to be proven, but in any case, potential vocal music without techne would amount to nothing more than the acoustic signals let loose by animals as signs of expression or communication but not as music. It can also be discussed whether some animals (bees, termites, etc.) possess something that can be identified as techne or if it’s simply a routine based on instinct. In any case, music, as a product of humans, is born from techne.
